Each year, League members bring Broadway to more than 30 million people in New York and more than 200 cities across the U.S. and Canada. Although his first instrument was the drums, which he pushed to gigs in a hand cart, he later took up the vibraphone, buying his first one with a £۵۰ bank loan. His art started with an interest in heraldry and sketching while he was still at school, before progressing to large-scale oils for which he was most noted. He joined the Leicester Sketch Club and became its chairman, as well as serving as president of the Leicester Society of Artists for a year. He exhibited widely, both in Leicester as well as throughout the country, and some of his work is also in the hands of private collectors. His subjects range from abstracts, collages, music, dance and carnival, but he was most proud of his series of Holocaust paintings, some of which can be seen at the Holcaust Centre, in Newark, Nottinghamshire. He says the story he unearthed is one of “racial representation, a story about living in ones authentic self as a means of gaining representation. “Sometimes, when you look at the footnotes of history, you find a more interesting story to tell about America,” Gaines says. “It was a perfect storm, and at the center of it were two comedians who were incredibly smart, witty and clever and two equally smart musicians,” Gaines says. After opening at the Broadway Theatre on May 8, 1952, Shuffle Along closed after four performances. Starring Sissle, Blake, Avon Long, and Thelma Carpenter, and choreographed by Henry LeTang, this incarnation was recorded in an abridged form by RCA Victor, combined with selections from Blackbirds of 1928.
Although some of the characters may come across as questionable stereotypes by today’s standards, the success of the musical in 1921 marked a major break-through for African-American musical theatre performers. The landmark production renewed the public’s interest in black theatricals and marked a decided turning point in the history of black entertainment in the United States. It introduced to the Broadway stage a black chorus of partially garbed “girls” in the style of the white “Follies.” Because of the show’s popularity, the entertainment profession witnessed the return of black musical comedies to Broadway on a regular basis. The musical’s plot was based on Mills and Lyles’ play “The Mayor of Dixie,” about two conniving men, Sam Peck and Steve Jenkins, who run for mayor of Jimtown.
